The Faculty of Arts - Bangladesh

It gives me great pleasure to introduce the Faculty of Arts of Eastern University and welcome students to the Faculty. The Faculty of Arts at present offers three programs:
4- year B.A .(Hons) in English language and literature,
2-year M.A. ELT,
and 1-year M.A ELT.
Besides, there are some general courses from Social Sciences such as Bangladesh Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Psychology including a course on Bangla literature at the undergraduate level.

The programs in English have been designed taking into consideration the fact that in the globalized world of today proficiency in English is a sine qua non for worthwhile social and professional living at home and abroad. Graduates in English are preferred for jobs ranging from teaching to media, banks, NGOs and multi-national companies. In the Middle-Eastern countries alone, there is a huge demand for teaching jobs at Schools, Colleges and Universities besides professionals with proficiency in English in other areas. The English studies at Eastern follow needs-based multi-syllabus approach combining well-balanced Language & Literature courses in order to cater to the above-mentioned wide ranging needs for English proficiency.

The Faculty is headed by Professor Dr. Nurul Islam who was the founder Chairman of the Department of English, Jahangirnagar University. He taught at King Saud University for a decade and as such has a first-hand knowledge of the English language proficiency requirements of the Universities of Saudi Arabia and other Middle-Eastern Countries. He also taught at Michigan State University, U.S.A. as a Fulbright Senior Visiting Scholar. With him there are at present 18 highly qualified and highly motivated full-time faculties, some of them with degrees and training from abroad. Besides, some very senior and nationally renowned academics from Dhaka University and Jahangirnagar University also teach at Eastern as part-time faculty.
